Sergeant First Class (Retired) Barry Anthony Vaught Sr. Age 62 departed this life on Friday February 19, 2021 in Wichita Falls, Texas.
Arrangements are under the direction of Becker-Rabon Funeral Home in Lawton, OK, and Ocean View Funeral Home in Conway, SC. Funeral services will be at Ocean View Funeral Home in Conway, SC on March 11, 2021 at 10:00 am, with burial with full military honors at the Florence National Cemetery in Florence, South Carolina.
SFC. Barry Anthony Vaught Sr. was born September 13, 1958 into Trenton, New Jersey to Christine Vaught.
Barry graduated from North Myrtle Beach High School in 1976. He then entered the United States Army, where he began his lengthy career in Food Service. In the beginning of his military career, Barry was part of the Culinary Arts Team where he won several awards for competing in various categories such as baking and cake designs, his true passion.
His military honors include, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal (4th award) Army Achievement Medal (7th award), Army Good Conduct Medal (6th award), National Defense Service Medal/Award Forces Expeditionary Medal/ Southwest Asia Service Medal with 3 Bronze Service Star (BSS).
While in the military, he married Bernice Swint on November 23, 1981, and from this union a daughter, Tanisha Renea was born. Barry and Bernice later divorced, but they remained friends. He then married Linda Porter on April 12, 1993, and from this union two children were born, Alexandria Christine Marie, and Barry Jr.
Barry retired from the Army on 01/31/1998 at Ft. Sill Oklahoma and began working at the Comanche County Detention Center April 1, 1998 as the Food Service Supervisor until his passing.
Barry had an extraordinarily strong work ethic and was highly dedicated and loyal to every job and task he took on. He believed in going in early and staying late in order to accomplish any task given to him. A true soldier indeed.
Barry enjoyed being with his family, cooking out on the grill, (did not matter the weather), helping others and listening to old school music. Barry was extremely proud of his children, and the accomplishments in which they continue to achieve.
Barry leaves to cherish his memory, by his loving wife, Linda of 28 years. Daughters Tanisha (Brian) and grandson Brenden; Virginia, Alexandria, Oklahoma; City, Sons Barry Jr. (Bianca) and granddaughter Keira; Japan, Barry Spears, Texas and grandchildren Shaskyra, Sariah, Ty and Te’a. His mother, Christine (Fred) Wigfall Little River, SC, and sister Angie Wigfall; Little River, SC. Two uncles, Ralph Vaught, Conway SC, and Artis and (Bessie) Vaught of Long River, SC. His longtime Army buddy Adolphus Edwards, GA, and a long list of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Gregory “Ronnie” Wigfall, and Kent L. Vaught and his grandmother Estella Vaught, and his aunt Marva Vaught.
When Barry had met Linda’s mother, he said, “Mrs. Ernestine, I promise you that I will take good care of your daughter, and she will never have to want or need for any.” Barry was a true man of his word and will be deeply missed by his family. He was a loving husband and father to his family, and a true friend to those he met.
In lieu of flowers, food etc., the family requests that individuals that can, to donate to their local food bank to help their fellow friends and neighbors who are in need during these unprecedented times.
There will be a funeral service held at 10:00 am Thursday, March 11, 2021, at Ocean View Funeral Home, Conway Chapel. Burial will follow at 1:00 PM with full Military Honors at the Florence National Cemetery. Ocean View Funeral Home, Conway Chapel.
