Darnell Cohen Obituary

“God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.” Revelation 21:4

Darnell Cohen was born on October 20, 1963, in Greer, South Carolina to the late Nathan and Ethel Cohen. On Friday, August 15, 2025, Darnell answered the Lord’s Call.

Darnell found the Lord at an early age, at New Hope Baptist Church in Greer, South Carolina. He also served as a faithful member of New Faith Baptist Church in Wellford, South Carolina, where he taught Sunday School.

Darnell graduated from James F. Byrnes High School. He went to a job corps in Morganfield, Kentucky, where he graduated with a culinary arts certificate. When he finished the job corps he relocated back and forth from Spartanburg to Myrtle Beach for over 40 years, where he worked various cooking jobs, which was one of his many passions.

Darnell was involved in the Prison Ministry in Georgetown, South Carolina. He became an affiliated member of House of God under the leadership of Pastor Johnny Ford, where he was a dedicated member. Darnell never met a stranger. He had a good heart and always had encouraging words. Darnell was very jokey and had a way of making everyone laugh. When around him, there wasn’t a dull moment. He loved his family and friends. No matter what he battled or faced in this life, his love for God never changed. The moments with him, the sound of his voice, and his jokes are definitely going to be missed.

Darnell was preceded in death by a daughter, Michelle Wingo, and a sister, Judy Cohen.

He leaves to mourn and cherish his memory two daughters, Daniella Cohen of Pawley’s Island, South Carolina and Taylor Ard of Pooler, Georgia; two sons, Darnell (Trell) Cohen of Conway, South Carolina and Zachary Cohen of Spartanburg, South Carolina; three brothers, Heath and Daryl (twins) Cohen of Spartanburg, South Carolina, and Elgin (Jimmie) Cohen of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; two sisters, Lisa (Charles) Giles of Lyman, South Carolina and Benita (Gregory) Knowlin of Columbia, South Carolina; 10 grandchildren, a long time special best friend, Donna Nesbit; close friends, Pastor Johnny Ford, Minister Melvin Jefferson, Calvin Watters, Edmond Johnson, Gregory Greene, Terrance Carr, Herbert Bethea, Cerdric Duncan, Rev. Everett Plowden, and Minister Stanley Tribble; along with a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, family, and friends.
