Denise Grant Obituary

For we know that if the tent that is our earthly home is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens." 2Cor.5.1

Denise Cedre Vereen, the daughter of the late John D and Julia Hodge Vereen was born August 1, 1970. She departed this earthly life on January 9, 2025, at Mcleod Seacoast Hospital following a sudden illness.

Denise accepted Christ as her Savior at an early age and was a lifelong member of Mt. Zion African Methodist Episcopal Church.

“Niecy” as she was fondly called was a 1989 graduate of North Myrtle Beach High School. She attended Horry Georgetown Technical College. She worked in hospitality as a teenager and later turned her safe driving skills into her profession. She worked with the city of Charlotte N.C. for several years as a Transit Bus driver. She later moved back to Horry County and was employed as a Bus Driver with the Horry County School District.

“Niecy” loved music, she was gifted with a beautiful voice and a joyful spirit that touched many hearts. She sang on the Mt. Zion Voices of Praise Choir, and she was once signed to the record label Illest Intertainment and released her own CD. She was featured on BET’s Sundays Best. Whether “Niecy” was singing in the church choir or performing on stage, her voice had the power to move and inspire.

Her radiant smile and infectious laughter had a way of brightening even the darkest of days. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, and she absolutely loved her children.

Her parents and one brother John B. Vereen preceded her in death.

She leaves to cherish her sweet memories: One daughter Destiny Vereen; One son John Edward Vereen, both of the home; Two sisters, Paula (Anthony)Brockington of Myrtle Beach, SC, Carla Carmicheal of Conway, SC, Three nieces, Deshondra, Lashondra and Antionette, One nephew; Wesley Carmicheal; Six great nieces and nephews. Four uncles; James “Bees” (Jamma) Hodge of Little River, SC, Allen (Nancy) Vereen of Supply NC; Eric Hodge and Robert L. Vereen of Loris, SC, One aunt Catherine Parker of Washington, DC, a special close cousin; Beverly Bellamy and a host of other sorrowing relatives and friends.
