Dolores Craig Obituary

Dolores Wilhelmina Humprey was born June 25, 1935, in Brooklyn, NY to Garland A. Humphrey and Velma E. Humprey.

At an early age, Dolores accepted Jesus Christ and became a member of Sandy Mount Baptist Church in Smithfield, VA.

Dolores met and married Harold J. Johnson at Bridge Street Church. From this union they were blessed with two daughters, Brenda J. Johnson and Roslyn J. Johnson. Dolores continued her educational pursuits with raising two young children. It was at that time she realized how much she enjoyed working with children which subsequently led to her employment at The Head Start Early Childhood Development Center. She worked during the day and attended college at night. With due diligence and hard work, Dolores received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Early Childhood Education from Touro College in New York. Dolores joined Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in Brooklyn, NY. She was very active serving on the following committees: Pastor’s Aide, The Gospel Choir, BTU, Willing Workers Ministry, Progressive National Baptist Convention, and a Deaconess. She was actively involved in registering young voters and involved with the Parent & Teacher Association.

After retirement, she met and married Henry B. Craig after many years of friendship. The couple moved to Myrtle Beach where she became a member of Sandy Grove Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. Fred W. Johnson. At Sandy Grove, Mrs. Craig was actively involved in the following ministries: The Mass Choir, Senior Missionary, Hospitality Ministry and the Deaconess. Additionally, she taught BTU for many years, and she also taught Adult Vacation Bible School. Mrs. Craig loved her church family and spending time at Burgess Senior Citizen Center. She made many friends in her lifetime, she loved to laugh, tell funny jokes, work word puzzles and lead devotion at the Burgess Center under the management of Eula Mae Winningham. She did not mind lending a helping hand to others, she was always praising and thanking God and always putting Him first in her life.
