Dorothy McKelvie Mitchell

Dorothy McKelvie Mitchell, Born June 10, 1931, in Santee, South Carolina, was born to the late Ananias and Anna Riggins McKelvie. She departed this life on June 21, 2025, at the age of 94.

She was the youngest of six children. She attended Holly Hill Public Schools in her youth until she met and married her husband, Nathaniel Mitchell of Elloree, South Carolina. They were married for 20+ years and together they raised six children until his passing: Nathaniel, Larry, Veronica, Tyrone, Gregory, and  Melvin Mitchell. She was the last surviving member of the six McKelvie children.

Dorothy worked as a CNA for many years at Fish Memorial Hospital in Deland, FL, dedicating her life to caring for others with compassion and skill. The family relo­cated to Orangeburg, South Carolina. where she worked at Roper Industries until her retirement, after so many years, she decided to move to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, to be closer to her children.

Dorothy was a dedicated and loving mother to her children and grandchildren. She left an impact on all she met throughout her years of life. She will be well remem­bered for her great Sunday dinners with an open invitation to many friends and family. She loved her God and church services, watching Pastor GE. Patterson, on television throughout her life, and was so extremely proud of her six children and all the memories we created together on her birthdays and special occasions.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, five siblings and one grand­daughter, and one greatgrandson.

Dorothy leaves to cherish her memory, her devoted six children: Nathaniel Mitchell (Emily), Larry Mitchell (Lynda), Veronica Nesbitt (Alphonso), Tyrone Mitchell (Er­nestine), Gregory Mitchell (Bevelyn), Melvin Mitchell (Brenda), and a host of grand­children, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Dorothy’s Love will forever remain in our hearts.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, September 13, 2025, at the Miracle Tabernacle of Prayer Church.
