Mr. Eric Alfonza Dewitt, the son of Mr. Vertell and Mrs. Catherine Collins Dewitt, was born on July 23, 1965, in Conway, SC. He departed this life on Sunday, August 24, at the family home.
Eric, better known as “Jamma,” to all who knew and loved him, was preceded in death by his father, Vertell Dewitt, whom he greatly admired, and his only son, Eric Vertell Dewitt. Losing his son was not easy, and it was a burden “Jamma” carried until his final days.
He was employed at the AVX Corporation for several years and at Eller Outdoor Communication. He loved helping others whenever they needed him. Eric had a unique gift and talent for repairing basically anything!! Everyone who knew “Jamma” knew his gift was in his hands.
As a child, Eric enjoyed playing several sports, especially baseball and football. He was a member of the Seahawks football team and a graduate of the class of 1984. “Jamma” was a loyal and devoted Seahawk, “once a Seahawk, always a Seahawk!” Upon graduation from Myrtle Beach High School, “Jamma” attended Virginia State University for two years and was a member of the VSU football team.
Eric was blessed with three beautiful children: Shequilla, Eric (who preceded him in death), and Imani. To cherish Eric’s memories are his mother, Mrs. Catherine Dewitt; daughters Shequilla Arnold (Anthony “Shoddy”) of Myrtle Beach, SC, and Imani of Columbia. SC; four granddaughters, Erica, Aniya, Kaylen and Nova; one sister, Detra Galloway (Elvis) of Myrtle Beach; one nephew, Donald Gore (Nashari); one niece, Candance Galloway; one great niece, Naomi; one great nephew, Donald, Jr. and a great host of aunts, uncles, relatives and very dedicated and supportive friends.
