George Junior Murray formerly of Bucksport, passed away on March 9, 2023.
George Junior Murray was born on January 3, 1933, to the late Rev. George Murray, Sr., and Viola Huggins-Murray. On Thursday, March 9, 2023, God dispatched angels to his hospital room at Wilmington Hospital to lead him from his earthly home into eternal rest.
George was born at a time when the children had to work hard to help the family make ends meet, so as a teenager he left home to explore the rest of the world. He began his adventure in New York City but moved around to different cities; Baltimore, Newark, and Atlantic City. He was a master pool player and a sharp dresser. In Atlantic City, he acquired the name “Atlantic City George.” He finally settled down in Wilmington, Delaware, where he met and married Eulina Birckhead and fathered two children: Anthony and Jacqueline “Jackie.”
George was employed for many years as a construction laborer at Local Laborers Union 199. He was a hard worker.
Being the son of a preacher, the Word was embedded in George and he spread the Gospel in his singing. Everywhere he went he shared his gift, whether it be at churches, family reunions, or even at home. He was a faithful member at Ezion Fair Baptist Church (Wilmington, DE) and Mt. Sinai MBC (New Castle, DE) until his health failed.
Even though we can no longer enjoy his beautiful smile, the beautiful singing, the laughter, and the times he spent with loved ones here, we have memories that we will cherish forever. One of his favorite songs was “May the Work I’ve Done Speak for Me” and he lived to hear the words “Well Done.”
George leaves to cherish his loving memory: his daughter Jackie Murray of Tennessee; son Anthony Murray of North Carolina; one sister, Charlotte Murray-Sherman of Bucksport, SC; four grandchildren, LaWanda, LaTura, Erica, and Michael; a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, with a close bond with his cousin Joann Henry. He also had a long-term companion of many years, Francine Worley.
Along with his parents, George was preceded in death by four sisters, Eva Murray Evans, Rebecca Murray Bromell, Julia Murray Herriott, and Annie Mae Murray Young; three brothers, Isaiah Murray, David Murray, and William “Bill” Murray.
Funeral services will be held at Congo Funeral Home, 2317 N. Market Street, Wilmington, Delaware, on Friday, March 24, 2023, at 12 pm. The viewing will be held immediately before the funeral from 10 am to 11:45 am. He will be buried in Bucksport, SC at Bucksport Memorial Cemetery.
