Gertrude Jones Obituary

Gertrude, affectionately known as “Gertie” was born to the late Louis B. Henderson and the late Robert “Fox” Henderson who both preceded her in death. She departed this earth on November 23, 2022, one day before Thanksgiving at her home at 4:43 a.m. with her son Terry by her side.

Gertrude was raised in Birmingham Alabama and Louisville Kentucky where she attended and graduated from Central High School. Although she was still in high school, she conceived and gave birth to her first child, Terry Level Henderson (Sr), and six years later Katina Raye Henderson. Gertrude acquired a job at Mothers’ Cookies of Louisville as a line worker, so she always smelled sweet. She maintained a position with the company until retirement at 33 years of service.

Gertie met the love of her life and married him. So, on June 24, 1994, she became Mrs. Eugene “Hoppy” Jones of Louisville KY. She then became a stepmother to Chandra Jones and Chavis Jones.

“Hoppy” belonged to the Red Motorcycle Club of Louisville. She very quickly embraced her joy of becoming the wife of a biker. They traveled the country on his Honda going to bike rallies. She just enjoyed riding with her husband.

Gertie loved to travel anywhere and everywhere when she got the chance. She equally enjoyed hunting, barbeques, and get-togethers, partying in general. Every weekend throughout the year she had family and friends gather at her home.

Sadly, her husband hoppy fell ill and increasingly got worse he could no longer hold onto life. And on December 12, 2014, he preceded her in death after 21 years of marriage.

Shortly after the passing of her husband she moved in with her best friend Patricia who later became her daughter-in-law as she married her son Terry.

As a household that at one time included her sister-in-law Bernice McCall whom she affectionately called “Mom” one great-grandchild, Terry, Patricia (Trish), and of course herself.

Gertrude was the youngest girl of 9 children and in fact, she was the second youngest of her siblings. She was preceded in death by her oldest sibling Doris and then two brothers, Lavon Henderson, and Cecil. Her surviving siblings are Floyd, Evelyn, Sydell, and Archie who are the youngest.

While still living in Louisville the family attended church at grace fellowship community church in Jeffersonville Indiana.

Mrs. Jones was a long-time cancer survivor for 7 years and; 5-years before the now 3-person household relocated to Myrtle Beach SC, one of the places that she and Hoppy visited for bike week in December of 2022.

Shortly after cancer treatment in Louisville. Gertie began undergoing treatment and continued her treatments at the Market Common location. In June of this year, we discovered that the cancer had returned and spread rapidly.

As a family, we’ve traveled with mom on multiple trips from New Jersey, North Carolina, to Gatlinburg Tennessee, and served cities in Florida. She traveled well and whenever we asked if she was ready for a road trip she would reply “yes baby”.

Mom would always be appreciative of the things people have done for her and her response was always “thank you baby” we love you.

Gertrude H. Jones leaves behind 5 children including her stepchildren; 14 grandchildren; about 30 great-grands; and 4 great-great-grandchildren; 2 brothers; 3 sisters; and 3 sisters-in-law, Francis, Martha, and Vickie.  And a host of other family members across the country and many friends.
