Helen Johnson of Hillside, New Jersey was born February 2, I939 in Georgetown, S.C. to the late Louise Anderson and Paul Johnson. Helen Johnson entered eternal rest on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, at Beth Israel Medical Center in Newark, N.J.
Mama Helen or Sister Lee, as she was affectionately called, enjoyed life as a young lady. Helen attended Whittemore High School and Horry Georgetown Technical College. She worked at Waccamaw Pottery for over twenty years as a cashier and sales associate. Her grandmother, Susan Anderson introduced her to God at an early age and she accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior. Helen attended Bethel AME Church in Conway, S.C. Helen Moved to New Jersey in 2002 to help raise her granddaughter Madison. Later she relocated north to Hillside, N.J. to live with her daughter Esther for medical reasons.
Helen was the oldest of all her siblings and she helped raise them. They include Bell (Joseph) Gaither, the late Eddie (Queenie) Williams, Leroy (the late Annie) Williams, the late Samuel (Cheryl) Jones and Lucille (Leo) Young.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Traslyn Johnson, and her granddaughter, Chrisney Johnson.
She leaves behind a rich legacy of children, Cynthia Hannibal, Esther Johnson, Chris (Patricia) Johnson, Debra (Joseph) Moore and Gilbert Larue (Amy) Johnson; grandchildren, Roshine Hannibal, Rajheem Hannibal, Ranyesha Hannibal, Roshana (Elvis) Ford, True Madison, Aaron (Erica) Johnson, Cameron Johnson, Donovan Johnson and Braylon Johnson; step grandchildren, Lacretia Kelly, David James and Michael Rowell; a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends Carol Thompkins, Virginia Green, Dorothy Bethel, Julius Jones and Jay Blaine.
Mama Helen always put God and family first. She had a strong faith and trusted God in all things. She worked hard to raise her children as well as multiple grandchildren. She was a fierce protector and provider who ensured everyone always had a place to stay and food to eat. Rest in peace, Mom.
Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, August 30, 2024, at Bethel AME Church. Interment will follow at Rose Hill Memorial Gardens. There will be a viewing from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM, Friday at the church. Ocean View Funeral Home and Beach Crematory, Conway Chapel is assisting the Johnson Family.
