Imogene Drier Obituary

Imogene Marie Drier passed away, peacefully in her sleep, on March 7th, 2024 at the age of 93.  She was born on November 18, 1930, to Bernieth Robbins Vesley and George Vesley in Flint Michigan.  She married Charles Stanley Cook in 1948 and they had three children, Maureen, Gwen, and George.  She married Edwin (Ed) C. Drier in July of 1955 and they had one daughter, Linda.  The family resided in Groton, Connecticut while Ed served his country at the Naval Submarine Base, New London.  The family moved to the Muskegon area where Imogene started her business career working as an office manager for Langs Moving and Storage.  In 1974 they moved to their hometown of Pellston and bought a home on Douglas Lake.  Imogene’s career as an entrepreneur began to expand as they bought several rental cottages on Douglas Lake and she became owner and operator of the Grill in Pellston.  Using her excellent business sense, she expanded her operations by purchasing and operating Mr. Eds Bar on US-31 and operating the Brass Rail in the Pellston Airport.  The Friday night fish fry was very popular with area residents as well as summer visitors.  She added a very successful catering service mainly directed to wedding receptions.

Imogene was known as “Grandma” and “Imo” to family and friends and was well respected because she gave respect to those in the community.  A stern look from Imo was all it took to quiet rowdy patrons at her drinking establishments.  She and her home and business establishments were the focal point of the community. Whether it was sponsoring a toy drive, helping a veteran to heat his home, or providing Thanksgiving dinner to the community, Imo was at the lead.   This was a woman of grace, intelligence, and determination.  Even in her last days, she had a smile on her face, a “thumbs up” when asked how she was doing, and a “thank you” for even the little things you did for her.

Imogene was preceded in death by her husband Edwin (Ed) C. Drier, a sister Betty June Croff, a son George Cook, and a granddaughter Jessica Petrowski.  She is survived by her daughters Maureen (Don) Wiertella of Vicksburg, Gwen Garcia of Jackson, and Linda Mass of Levering, 7 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and 5 great, great-grandchildren.   Christian burial services and internment will be scheduled in the spring as well as a celebration of a life well lived.
