Joann Pittman Obituary

Joann Pittman, 58, of Conway, South Carolina, passed away on May 20, 2025. Born on October 14, 1966, in Brooklyn, New York, Joann brought joy, humor, and love to every life she touched.

Joann was the beloved daughter of Bertha and Milton Pittman and the proud mother of Shaquita Messina, Shakeena Glenn, and Shanessa Galloway who she loved more than anything, along with her “bonus” daughter, Davonna James. She shared a loving bond with her life partner, Chris Stephens, Her spirit lives on in her grandchildren, her devoted “sissy’s” Vanessa Fredericks, Shameka Shepard, and brother, James Williamson, Jr., and a host of close relatives and friends who are family.

Professionally, Joann was a skilled medical biller and coder for Duke University, with a wealth of knowledge in the medical records field. She received her AA degree at Kaplan University while single-handedly raising her children. While her work was not just a job but a reflection of her commitment to helping others, her strength was perhaps most profoundly displayed in her courageous battle with breast cancer, a fight she faced with grace and determination, ultimately overcoming it and continuing to live life on her own terms.

Outside of work, Joann had a zest for life. She loved puzzles and games, from Sudoku to Crash Bandicoot, and had a talent for sewing, especially when it came to making her signature “JoJo Honeybug” nursing uniforms. She was happiest when spending time with her grandchildren, laughing with family, or giving thoughtful, heartfelt advice as gifts. Her tough outer shell only made her tender heart shine brighter, and her goofiness, quick wit, and unmatched talent in everything from hair to nails made her unforgettable.

Joann never ended a phone call without saying, “I love you more”, a phrase that summed up the way she lived her life; with love that always went the extra mile. She gave freely, loved fiercely, and left an indelible mark on all who knew her. Her strength, laughter, and love will forever echo in the hearts of those she leaves behind.
