Joe Small Obituary

Joe Small of Conway passed away on Saturday, May 6, 2023. 

On March 26, I939 Joe Small was born to James Small and Elizabeth Anderson Small of Sampit, South Carolina. Joe was preceded in death by his parents Elizabeth Anderson Small and James Small, his eight siblings of this union. Elijah Anderson, Willie Small, Elouise Manick, Catherine Sargent, Samuel Small, James Small Jr., and Robert Small and his wife of 29 years, Stella Diane Small. Joe gave his life to Christ and was later baptized on December 22, 20I3 by his Pastor Rev. Dr. Charles M. Pee. Joe was a devoted member of Friendship Missionary Baptist Church of Conway SC.

In I959 Joe graduated from Whittemore High School. He took flight and began his adulthood in Conway, SC. He met his first wife Sarah Elizabeth DeWitt, and together they moved to Bridgeport, CT, and of this union, one child was born, Elizabeth Ann Small. Joe worked as a Plant Supervisor at Avco Lycoming in Stratford, CT. Joe relocated to Las Vegas, Nevada. There he worked two jobs: at Nellis US Air Force Base as a mechanic and at Las Vegas Convention Center as Security. He fathered one child with Helen Crumb, Joy Small of Bridgeport, CT.

In I975, Joe met his future wife Stella Diane Southerland. One child was born Priscilla Ann Small before they relocated to Conway, SC. Of this union, another child was born Jermaine Small.

In I98I Joe and Stella were united in marriage. They built their first brick home located behind the National Guard Armory. Joe and Stella cared for his mother Elizabeth Anderson Small until God called her home on October I0, I989. Joe attended Horry Georgetown Technical College where he received his Blueprinting Certification. Joe also received many certifications and awards which include Welding Technician, CPR certification, ASE master mechanic certification, Notary Republic certification, and the State of South Carolina seal of Governor. Joe worked multiple jobs which included community mechanic, law enforcement at Atlantic Beach Police Department, AVX, Sears, Horry County School Bus Driver, Commission of the Blind, CRYPTA Public Transportation, Advance Auto Parts, and retired from AutoZone and J Reuben Long Detention Center.

On May 6, 2023, God called Joe home. He leaves fond and loving memories to his four children; Elizabeth Ann (Paul) Prince of Stratford, CT, Joy Small of Las Vegas, Nevada, Priscilla (Timothy) Pearl of Conway, SC, Jermaine (Monica) Small of Florence, South Carolina. Two step-children Troy Southerland of North Dakota and Lisa Faulk of Conway, SC, 22 grandchildren, and I6 great-grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday, May 13, 2023, at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church.  Interment will follow at Rose Hill Memorial Gardens.  There will be a visitation from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM Friday at Ocean View Funeral Home and Beach Crematory, Conway Chapel.  There will be a repass at Mason Temple Church of God following the burial.
