Kevin Key Obituary

Kevin Lee Key of Myrtle Beach passed away on Sunday, February 25, 2024. 

Mr. Kevin Lee Key was born on July 5, 1962, to the late Irma Faye and David Lee Key in Newark, New Jersey. He was known as “Key”, “Karrod”, or just simply “Kev”.

He was educated in the Newark Public School System where he attended Belmont Runyon Elementary School, Clinton Place Junior High, and graduated from Malcolm X Shabazz High School class of 1980.

Kevin mastered the game of basketball at the tender age of nine years old. His passion for the game resulted in him leading his high school basketball team to win the state championship in 1980. He was regarded as one of the best point guards in Newark, New Jersey, earning him the nickname “hard to guard”.

In New Jersey, Kevin was employed in the security and courier industries. Later in 1997, he moved his family to Conway, South Carolina. He was a computer science teacher and coached the boy’s basketball team at Whittemore Park Middle School for several years. He was loved beyond measure by students and staff. He was employed for the last thirteen years at the Lighthouse Mental Health Hospital where he held the position of a Medical Technician. He gained a great rapport with the youth and elderly. He provided extensive care for them by providing clothes, shoes, and emotional support. He received multiple awards for his hard work and dedication.

Kevin was preceded in death by his wife Cassandra Jones and brother, William “Kareem” Jones (Fatboy).

He leaves to cherish his memories two daughters, Karisha (Joseph) Nicholson and Khamilyah Jones; his one and only son, Derek (Lauren Grant) Jones; a loving sister, Lori Key; four brothers, Rev. Woodrow (Rev. Dorothy) Jones, Kenric Jones, Quantrell Jones, and Jarodd (Sonya) Jones, a granddaughter, Izhané Connor; great-granddaughter, Sarai Drew, special uncle, William “Uncle Rudy” Pitt, special nieces, Latisha Jones, Zyasia Flythe, Imani Croom, Tierrah “Tee-Tee” Badger-Jones, and Kayla Jones; special nephews, Tahjae Muhammad, Quantrell (Ray) Jones, and Matthew Chambers; godson, Corey Williamson and goddaughter, Zaniya “Nobby” Phifer.

The Man, The Myth And The Legend!!!!

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, March 2, 2024, at St. Mary Missionary Baptist Church. Ocean View Funeral Home and Beach Crematory, Myrtle Beach Chapel is assisting the Key Family.
