Lisa Laverne Mitchell-Wade of Myrtle Beach passed away on Sunday, September 24, 2023.
“I saw Heaven and it’s beautiful. Anyone would want to go there. Angie, you won’t have to worry about me, I'll be all right.” -Lisa Mitchell September 14, 2023
Lisa Laverne Mitchell was born to the late Andrew and Laura Dailey Mitchell on May 27, 1961, in Baltimore, MD. She was the fifth of their six children. Lisa departed this life peacefully on September 24, 2023, in Florence, SC.
Lisa received her early religious training from her parents and her grandmother, the late Viola Washington Mitchell. She was baptized by Rev. Dr. George A. Crawley, Jr. of Saint Paul Baptist Church in Baltimore. Later, Lisa joined Sandy Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Myrtle Beach, SC under the leadership of the late Rev. Fred Johnson. Lisa was a faithful member of the Senior Missionary Society and taught Vacation Bible School.
Lisa received her early education in the Baltimore City Public School System. In 1988, she graduated from Howard University in Washington, DC with a Bachelor of Science degree. She received her Master of Science degree from Towson State University in Towson, MD in 1990. After college, Lisa relocated to Myrtle Beach, where her career as a speech-language pathologist blossomed.
Lisa owned and operated Speech Language Services, LLC in Myrtle Beach until she had to close it because of illness. When her health allowed her to return to work, she worked as a speech-language pathologist for several firms in and around Baltimore. Lisa felt her work was a calling rather than a job. While still in high school and without any formal training, she helped her brother, Eric, overcome his stuttering. Lisa served many children diagnosed with reading disabilities and autism, often free of charge. She loved her career and worked until she was forced to retire.
Lisa enjoyed traveling, singing, dancing, and playing spades but did not like the “serious” players. Her favorite television shows were Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy, and Family Feud. Lisa was an avid sports fan. She loved watching Orioles and Ravens games to the end, even if they were not winning. Lisa loved to party and always invited the “Party People” to Myrtle Beach.
Lisa was preceded in death by her parents and her older brother, Andrew Mitchell, Jr. She leaves to mourn her passing four siblings: Melodye Mitchell Ray (Harold), Brenda Mitchell Fleming, Angela Mitchell-Butler (Leonard), and Eric Mitchell; four nieces: Aisha-Zakiya Boyd, Kamaria Boyd, Zakiya-Shomari Fleming, and Imani Fleming; one nephew: Quaadari Fleming (Sheresse); one great niece: Shomari-Zakiya Aulton; two great-nephews: Quaadari Fleming, II and King Fleming; one bonus niece: Nichelle King; lifelong friends: Annie Futrell, Carolyn Jackson, Shanae Brown, Susanne McCoy, Malisha Jones, Dorothy Harris, and Mark Harris; and a host of family and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 11:30 AM on Saturday, October 7, 2023, at Sandy Grove Missionary Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Pine Island Community Cemetery. There will be a viewing from 11:00 AM to 11:30 AM at the church.
