Marvin Nicholson was born in Marston, NC (Richmond County) on May 28, 1936, to Henry and Sallie Nicholson. They were sharecroppers in Moore, NC. After graduation from Berkley High School in 1954, he joined the military, serving with the Army’s 11th Airborne Division until 1958, the last two years in Augsburg, Germany. After his discharge from the military, he returned to Aberdeen where he married. He and his wife Julia moved to Southern California where he enrolled in BIOLA University and California State University in Los Angeles. During which time they brought into the world the four most wonderful children, Marvin, Jr. (Nobi), Ellen (Junay), Cindy, and Crystal. After graduation, he returned to the South where he would teach in the following school districts over the next five years: Moore County (Aberdeen, Berkley High School, where both he and Julia graduated). He also taught in Durham and Richmond County in North Carolina and Washington, D.C. before moving north to teach and serve as Supervisor and Administrator in the Newark, NJ School District for twenty years before retiring to the South. During that time his youngest daughter and fifth child, Robin was born. In 1989, he married Lynette Sanders, adding three daughters, Lakesha, Kaiera, and Rachel to his family. Upon his early retirement from the state of New Jersey, the family moved to Horry County, South Carolina (Galivants Ferry and Conway). He was blessed to have a long life, as imperfect as it was. He was fortunate to have a family who showed him the highest level of respect in spite of his short comings and imperfections. He had a long life of service to his church and the community. His involvement in the Civil War Reenactment Community gave him new meaning and purpose for living over the 30 year period with these individuals.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Harvey, Lonnie (Bubba), Joseph, and James; his son, Marvin Nicholson, Jr. (Nobi); and his grandson, Joseph, II (Lil Joey).
He leaves his wife, Lynette; brother, George; children, Ellen (Art), Cindy, Crystal (Jerry), and Robin (Joseph); stepdaughters, Lakesha (Hassan), Kaiera, Rachel (Devon); grandchildren, Adrian and family, Alexandra, Chrissyann, Shakori, Devan (who gave him the name PopPop), Naomi, Isaiah, Jadon (who beat him in chess). Adopted children, William and family, Dolores and family, Timothy, Christine and family, Margaret “Dolly” and family (from Lakasha he became Popi), Tracey and family, and Kenneth. All his wonderfully precious nieces and nephews, his equally precious cousins, in-laws, special friends, and none more than the Civil War reenactment community which gave him such purpose in his later years. The complete community, some by name, James, Jojo, Harvey, Charles, Bernard, Malculm, Tommie, and the entire Civil War reenactment fraternity.
