Melvin Holmes, Sr. Obituary

Melvin E. Holmes, Sr., formerly of Burgess, passed away on June 16, 2026.

Melvin E. Holmes, Sr., 75, of Troy, peacefully entered into eternal life surrounded by his loving family on June 16, 2026, at Albany Medical Center Hospital in Albany, NY.

Born in Conway, SC, and growing up in Myrtle Beach, SC, he was the son of the late Edison and Leona (Rogers) Holmes.

Melvin graduated from Socastee High School in 1970, where he was a dedicated student and proudly participated in both football and track. Shortly after graduation, at the age of 20, he answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Army. His service in Vietnam became a source of lifelong pride, a fact that was evident to anyone who knew him, as he proudly wore one of his many Vietnam Veteran hats almost everywhere he went.

Melvin had been employed by Garelick Farms for many years as a truck driver and later by Logistics One in Saratoga Springs, where he continued the career he loved. Truck driving was Melvin’s passion. After many years on the road, he developed an incredible sense of direction.

Beloved father to Shundell Greene, of Murrells Inlet, SC, Melvin E. "Chico" Holmes, Jr., of Troy, NY, Shaketa L. (Jamal) Holmes-Dickinson, of East Greenbush, NY, Melvin Anthony Holmes, of Troy, NY, and Monica M. Holmes of Troy, NY. He also shared a special fatherly bond with Craigory A. Holmes of Troy, New York

Cherished grandfather, affectionately known as "Peepa," to 23 grandchildren. He was also blessed with beloved great-grandchildren, all of whom brought him tremendous joy.

Beloved brother of Joseph Holmes of Schenectady, NY, William R. Holmes of Myrtle Beach, SC, Peggy (Lamont) Holmes-Hairston of Wilmington, NC, Marlene Holmes-Zanders of Myrtle Beach, SC, Loretta Bethea of Murrells Inlet, SC, and the late Georgia M. Holmes and the late Mertice D. Holmes; special cherished uncle to his niece, Tanya Holmes; also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

Though he will be deeply missed, Melvin's legacy of love, service, strength, and devotion to family will live on in the many lives he touched. His memory will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
