Mr. Phillip Elmo Batts affectionately called “Sam”, the son of the late Henry and Louise Batts, was born on November 17, 1936, in Halifax County, North Carolina. He was called to eternal rest on Monday, February 10, 2025, at his daughter’s residence in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
Phillip attended grade school in Springhill, North Carolina and assisted with maintaining the family farm. He continued his education later in life and earned his General Education Development Diploma. He accomplished this feat by the grace of God and support of family while working simultaneously at the United States Marine Corps Air Station at Cherry Point, N.C. He believed in himself and demonstrated a strong work ethic. As a result, he received an award for the accrual of one thousand five hundred (1500) hours of sick leave credit. His superiors appreciated his ability to accept challenges, adapt positively, maintain standards, and get the job done as the USMC Warehouse and Retail Department Supervisor. He received the Federal Length of Service Award in recognition of forty years of faithful service and retired in 1996.
Phillip united in marriage with Dorothy Mae Johnson. He was predeceased by Dorothy on March 29, 2021. They celebrated 63 years of marriage and were blessed with four children. Together, they imparted the importance of overcoming obstacles to their children through hard work, education, dedication, and continued faith. He gave his life to Christ, became a member of St. Paul Church of Christ, and served the Lord and the church.
He is survived by daughters, Cheri Hunter (Joe) of Newberry, SC; Ann Daniels (William Mack) of Myrtle Beach, SC; Cynthia Batts of Virginia Beach, SC; son, Phillip Batts of New Bern, NC; grandchildren, William Brandon Daniels of Myrtle Beach, SC, Whitney Daniels of New York, NY; Alyssa and Ryan Batts of New Bern, NC; great-granddaughter, Brielle Batts of New Bern, NC; sisters, Isadell Beatty and Marion Miller of New Bern, NC; and a host of nephews, nieces, and cousins.
