Carolyn Lucille McCray Hemingway was born December 7, 1945, to the late Roy, Sr., & Ella Mae McCray in Bucksport, South Carolina. Carolyn made her triumphant entry into heaven on Sunday, August 21, 2022.
She was preceded in death by her parents Roy & Ella Mae McCray, her husband Thomas Hemingway, Sr., and five brothers: Roy McCray, Jr., Foster McCray, Kenneth McCray, Burnett McCray and Ronnie McCray of Loris, SC
Carolyn married The Love of Her Life, Thomas Hemingway, Sr., September 5, 1965, and to this union Five children were reared.
“Mua” and “Christian Lady” as she was affectionately known attended Richardson Training School, Whitemore High School Class of 1962 graduate, and HGTC where she obtained her Child Development degree. At an early age, Carolyn accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior, joined the church and started her “Christian Journey” at Salem African Methodist Episcopal Church. Carolyn received the call to preach under the pastorage of Rev. Harry L. Wilson and did her Initial Trial Sermon, August 2006. She was ordained in December 2009 by Presiding Prelate Preston Warren Williams, II. She served in many church capacities: WMS President, YPD Director, Church School Teacher, Class Leader, Senior Steward, Prayer Warrior, she formed a Prayer Ban where she went out weekly into the community visiting the sick and shut-in, she formed a prayer group to serve those in need, entitled EMP where the group prayed every morning Monday thru Saturday @6:00 a.m. She participated in the Real Power Early Morning Prayer (EMP) group daily Monday through Saturday to pray until something happened. She rendered monthly church service at Conway Manor Nursing Home in Conway, SC., She was a member of Marion District Women-in-Ministry and Worship Leader for Praise Team. Carolyn was not only a warrior, but she was also a SERVER. She made sure God’s people were provided for. She truly was a good solider in the Lord’s army.
Carolyn was gainfully employed at AVX Corporation, Myrtle Beach, SC and The Sunbeam Bread Company, Conway, SC for thirty years. After retirement she began her own businesses opening Lil Tikes Day & Night Care and Mom & Pop Soul Food Restaurant.
She leaves to cherish her memories and continue her legacy, Three daughters: Dechi (Antonio) Jones of Ft. Washington, MD, Thomasena (Darrell) Parker of Hawaii, Angel Hemingway of Wilmington, NC. Two sons: Michael (Gwen) Hemingway and Thomas Hemingway, Jr., both of Myrtle Beach, SC. Four sisters: Jacqueline Hunt of Temple Hills, MD, Brenda (Lonnie) Murphy of Bucksport, SC; Lydia (Paul) Anderson of Ashburn, VA; and Denise McCray of Bucksport, SC. Three brothers: Lynn (Joann)McCray of Florence, SC; and Joe (Margaret) McCray of Wilmington, NC.. Two sisters-in-law: Josephine McCray of Bucksport, SC and Justine Hemingway of Georgetown, SC, One brother-in-law: Willie Hemingway of Georgetown, SC. Thirteen grandchildren, Seven great grandchildren, a host of loving nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. Her longtime friend and Armor-bearer, Alma Moore-Jenkins of Myrtle Beach, SC.
Rev. Carolyn McCray Hemingway formally of the Bucksport community passed away on Sunday, August 21, 2022, in Clinton, MD.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday, August 27, 2022, at Salem AME Church in Conway. Interment will follow in the Salem AME Church Cemetery. There will be a viewing from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Friday, August 26, 2022, at Salem AME Church in the Bucksport Community of Conway.
The family will be receiving friends at the home of her son, Thomas Hemingway 4192 John Luther Rd. Myrtle Beach, SC 29588.
