Reverend Michael Holmes ll Obituary

“As for me and my house, we will serve the lord,”  Joshua 24:15

Michael- Anthony Holmes, II, peacefully departed this life and entered eternal rest on Saturday, May 10, 2025. He now rests peacefully in the arms of his Heavenly Father. He was born on January 13, 1960, in Georgetown, South Carolina, to Bettie J. Holmes and the late James O. Holmes.

Mike was educated in the Horry County public school system and graduated from Socastee High School in 1979. He then attended Coastal Carolina College. Early in his career, he worked in early childhood education with Head Start in Georgetown, SC, and the Pawleys Island Childcare Center in Pawleys Island, SC. He later became a dedicated full-time employee with the City of Myrtle Beach, serving over 15 years in the Parks and Recreation Department.

Mike also answered a higher calling over 30 years ago, serving faithfully as a pastor within the Marion District of the AME Church. Over the years, he led several congregations and, most recently, served as the beloved pastor of Brown Chapel AME Church in the Bucksville community of Conway. His life was rooted in a deep love for God and an unwavering compassion for people.

On July 8, 1995, Mike married the love of his life, Lisa Holmes, and together they shared a beautiful journey of love and partnership for nearly 30 years.

Mike never met a stranger—he greeted everyone with a warm smile, a generous heart, and a prayer to share. His love for others knew no bounds, and he was always ready to lend a hand without hesitation. Rather than saying "no,” his response was always, "I got it" or "I'll get it; embodying his selfless nature. He consistently put others before himself and gave his time and energy freely.

Mike took great pride in his yard and was known for riding his lawnmower like a prized vehicle, up and down the road with a smile. Rain or shine, he didn't miss a day if the grass looked slightly out of place. Keeping his lawn picture-perfect wasn't just a chore—it was his happy face.

At an early age, Mike joined Mt. Zion AME Church in the Burgess Community, where his faith began to take root. He was well known in the community as the

Most spirited and enthusiastic parent at local school events, always cheering with pride and joy.

Mike also gave through sports and mentorship; he served as a referee with the South Carolina Referee Association and coached with Horry County Parks and Recreation, where he positively impacted many young lives. He was also an active member of the Good Times Social Club, cherishing fellowship and friendship throughout the years.

Mike was a proud and devoted husband and father, blessed with five children. He married the love of his life, Lisa Holmes, on July 8, 1995. He has three daughters: Melanie Holmes (Eyen) of Woodland Park, NJ; Angelica "Angel" Godbolt (Tommy) of Conway, SC; and Alexis Holmes of Surfside Beach, SC; two sons, Alex Holmes and Michael "MJ" Holmes, both of the home. He is survived by his loving mother, Bettie J. Holmes, who remained a constant presence in his life. He also leaves behind six devoted siblings: Barbara Hall (Donald) of High Point, NC, Vanessa Cooper (Paul) of Myrtle Beach, SC, Cynthia Bovain of Myrtle Beach, SC, Melissa Johnson (Wayne) of Chicago, Illinois, Kimberly Gary (Ron) of Surfside Beach, SC, and his brother, Christopher "Chris" Holmes of Surfside Beach, SC. He was preceded in death by his sister, Theresa Sulton. Mike is also fondly remembered by his in-laws, Reverend Freddie and Diane Moody; two brothers-in-law, Correy Moody (Zelda) of Aynor, SC, and Deon Moody (Katrina) of Aynor, SC; and his lifelong friend, Ronald "Peanut" Alston. Mike leaves a lasting impact on a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends who were all touched by his kindness, joyful spirit, and generous heart.
