Robert Jones Obituary

Robert Dana Jones, born February 20,1947, was the eldest of six children born to the beloved Mildred Ann Jones and Robert Woodson Jones in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Dana, as he was known, was raised in a loving and close family in the neighborhood of Beltzhoover and graduated from South Hills High School in 1965. In his early 20s, Dana married Jay Ann Smith and to this union two sons, Robert Jay and John Craig were born. In 1981, daughter Christina Faye was born out of another union.

Dana, a smooth man who loved music and dancing, was also a talented drummer. He along with his closest friends formed a band and played in venues all around Pittsburgh in the 1960s and early ’70s.

A graduate of the University of Pittsburgh in 1977 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology, Dana devoted his time and career to the elderly, working in the field of geriatrics in the Hill District for 22 years. He then retired from the Hill House Association.
Soon after, Dana followed his heart and moved to South Carolina where God led him to Gwen Simmons; they married in 2015 in Myrtle Beach.
Anyone who was acquainted with Dana knew that he courageously enlisted in the United States Army during the Vietnam era. He was a very proud member of the 101 Airborne Division, “Screaming Eagles” and was an honored and noble Vietnam Veteran. His humorous, brave and admirable stories of his time in Vietnam as a 101 Airborne Screaming Eagle are part of his legacy and he will be remembered by his family for his impeccable style, candor, 1970’s jargon, love for dogs and his slick dance moves.

Dana, a brother, husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather and uncle was preceded in death by his two younger brothers, Michael Ray and Gregory Forrest and his cherished parents Bobby and Bunny.

He leaves to mourn his lovely and devoted wife Gwen, sons Bobby J and John, daughter Christina, three sisters, Leslie, Melanie, and Denise, sister-in-law Lorraine Jones, 12 grandchildren Robert Jr., Darion, Lash'e, Lauryn, Serenity, Adrian, Royce, Trevana, Tyelle, Ashley, John Jr., Juliandra, Atreyah and six great-grandchildren along with a host of nieces and nephews friends near and far and we can't forget his faithful four-legged companion Maxwell (Max).

A small man in stature with a larger-than-life personality, heart, and spirit he will be deeply missed. His life was indeed, “out of sight”.
Airborne.
