Roddy Brown Obituary

Roddy R. Brown was born in Pawleys Island, SC, to the late Colbert Brown, Sr., and the late Anna Bell Riley Brown on October 12, 1941. His siblings, Clinton Sanford Brown and Robert Glenwood Brown Sr., also preceded him in death.

In his early years, he was educated at Holy Cross Faith Memorial School, where he was taught by Ms. Ruby Forsythe. He later attended Carver School in Myrtle Beach, SC, and he ultimately

IMF was a member of the 1959 graduating class of Whittemore High School in Conway, SC. He was a graduate of Morris College in Sumter, SC. He later received his Master of Education Degree from the University of South Carolina.

At an early age, he became a member of Holy Cross Faith Memorial Episcopal Church, where he actively participated as an Acolyte and member of the choir. As an adult, he continued as a member of the choir and assumed roles as a lay reader, participated on vestry as a warden and senior warden, participated as a Sunday school teacher, participated in the choir, participated on the Church Planning Board, and participated in many other capacities for which he was called. In his quest to further his relationship with Christ and to help spread the Word to others, later in life he was baptized by Reverend Albert Singletary at Center Missionary Baptist Church. In addition, he furthered his work in Christ through his participation and membership in Abundant Life Bible Ministries and Mt. Olive AME Church Bible Study groups.

In 1966, Roddy married the love of his life, Fannie Carrie Thompson, and she became Fannie T. Brown. From this union, they parented two children, Ronada and Roderick Brown.

After completing undergraduate school, Roddy became employed with the Horry County School System and began his teaching career at the Finkley School in Loris, followed by a teaching stint at Lakewood Elementary School, and later finished his teaching career at Myrtle Beach Middle School, before retiring after thirty (30) years of teaching. His teaching and mentorship

. After retiring from teaching, Roddy dedicated a great portion of his time to volunteering and serving where needed in the community and church. He served as a member of the Myrtle Beach Downtown Revitalization Board and Horry County Tax Assessor Committee. Also, as a means of servicing the community, Roddy participated as a tour guide, along with his wife, the Executive Director for the Colored School Museum, the Education Center, and the After School and Summer Arts programs, which were sponsored and administered through the Grand Strand Cultural Arts Foundation, founded by Fannie. In his capacity, he was tasked with sharing his thoughts and recollections of the Booker T. Washington community, pre- and post-segregation. He also served as one of the early members of the Horry County Community Empowerment Project, where he was a community board member for Charlie's Place.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Colbert Sr. and Anna Bell Brown, two siblings, Clinton Sanford Brown and Robert Glenwood Brown Sr., and his loving wife, Fannie T.

Roddy Brown of Myrtle Beach passed away on Friday, June 5, 2026. Viewing for Mr. Brown will be held on Friday, June 19, 2026, from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. at Ocean View Funeral Home and Beach Crematory, Myrtle Beach Chapel. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 20, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Cross Faith Memorial Church in Pawley's Island. Interment will take place in the church cemetery.
