Terry A. Burroughs, Sr. passed away on Wednesday, October 2, 2024.
Terry Alfonza Burroughs, Sr. was born in Conway, South Carolina on January 5, 1960, to James Edward Ford and the late Cora Lee (Joseph) Burroughs-Smalls. On October 2, 2024, at Regency Hospital in Florence, South Carolina, Terry was called home by God at the age of 64 with his wife Charlene by his side. Terry was a known resident of Conway, South Carolina, and attended Conway High School where he was a star student athlete. As a Conway Tiger, he excelled in basketball and football. He graduated with the Class of 1978 and was awarded a full scholarship athletically and academically to Tennessee State. Terry lived a lively life and has always been trustworthy in the Lord. He accepted Jesus Christ as his savior and was a faithful member of Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church in Bucksport, South Carolina. As his illness continued to make him weak physically, he did not let it affect him faithfully and began attending Wellspring Fellowship Church which was closer to home, allowing him to become steadfast in his journey with the word of God.
Terry had numerous jobs over the years. He was employed with AVX for most of his working career and then switched gears to management in retail where he would share his love of shoes and fashion. As a fond member of management, he worked at SCS Factory Shoe Store and Burlington Brands. Terry Burroughs, Sr. was a humble, kind, thoughtful, generous, charismatic, cheerful, God-loving, husband, father, uncle, brother, and friend. He IS a man of God.
Terry Sr. never met a stranger and had a vibrant personality, as he could engage in conversations with anyone for hours. He enjoyed bible study, and spending time with his family, and his grandchildren. He loved watching sports such as football and basketball. Terry provided a sense of security, possessed masculinity like no other, and was the kindest, most loving man anyone could come across. Even up to his last days Terry still provided the same presence we will now all cherish forever.
In 1986, he married his loving wife Charlene Johnson Burroughs, and expanded their family with two handsome boys, Terry Burroughs, Jr. and Derrick Burroughs. He was also blessed with two beautiful daughters, Tocarra Sumpter and Seemone Bellamy.
Terry, Sr. was preceded in death by his mother, Cora Lee Burroughs-Smalls; grandfathers, Thomas Jefferson Ford and Henry Burroughs; grandmothers, Etta Burroughs and Elmita Ford; brother, James Edward Burroughs; aunts, Susie Cobb, Geraldine Burroughs, Carrie L. Bellamy, JoAnn Burroughs Eleanor James and Sarah Stanley; uncles, John Bellamy and John Ford; and a son, Terry Burroughs, Jr.
Terry, Sr. is survived by his wife, Charlene Burroughs; his son, Derrick Burroughs; two daughters, Tocarra Sumpter and Seemone Bellamy; ten beautiful grandchildren, Jasmine, Ekimo, Tashaun, Terry Maddox, Beckett, Addie, Valin, Aris, Azarian, and Kaliyah; aunts, Mable Griffin, Bernice McCray, Patrel Brady, Rosa Bellamy, Rosa Ford; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Terry, Sr.’s grace, love, and smile will be with us forever. One of his favorite bible verses was Matthew 17: 20-21 “If your faith is as big as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, move from here to there, and it will move.”
Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Owens Cemetery. There will be a viewing from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM on Monday, October 7, 2024, at Ocean View Funeral Home and Beach Crematory, Conway Chapel.
