William Friend, IV. Obituary

“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”
—2 Timothy 4:7 (NIV)

William Alfred Friend, IV, affectionately known as Will or Billy, departed this life on July 5, 2025, surrounded by love and family. Born on August 1, 1970, in the Bronx, New York, Will was the beloved son of the late Elizabeth LaCaruba and the late William Alfred Friend, III. He was also blessed with the love and guidance of a devoted bonus father, Paul LaCaruba.

Will graduated from Henry Hudson Regional High School in Highlands, New Jersey, in 1989. He continued his education at Brookdale Community College and Rowan University, studying Physical Education with a specialty in Special Education. His heart for people—especially youth—shaped much of his life’s purpose.

A natural mentor, coach, and motivator, Will served as a strength and conditioning coach and dedicated himself to coaching youth recreation football and basketball. He also played arena football with the Palmetto Havoc, bringing the same energy, leadership, and passion to the field that he brought to life.

Will’s faith was the foundation of who he was. He truly loved the Lord and was proud to serve on the Safety Team at NewSpring Church, where he found joy in worship and community. He took pride in helping to create a safe and welcoming space for others to grow in their faith.

To know Will was to love him. His genuine spirit, sharp wit, and unmatched sense of humor left a lasting impression on everyone he met. A devoted Miami Dolphins fan, he never missed a chance to root for his team. But more than anything, Will cherished his role as a husband and father.

On October 14, 2017, he married the love of his life, Shunnika Goings-Friend. Their bond was rooted in love, faith, and unwavering support for one another. He was a proud and loving father to four sons: Matthew Healy, Joshua Friend, Jeremiah Friend, and James Damon.

Will is survived by his devoted wife, Shunnika; his sons; his brother, Robert Friend; his sister, Kimberly Cumiskey; and his brother from another mother, Mike Moore (Tocha). He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Nicole Goings, and his brother-in-law, Eric Goings (Nina). He leaves behind a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family, and many beloved friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Bonnie Friend.

Will lived a life of impact—one full of love, laughter, faith, and service. Though his physical presence is no longer with us, his legacy will continue in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
